In the six months before Vertically Inclined Rock Gym opened in 1996, construction crews lugged thousands of pounds of steel, hundreds of plywood sheets, 90 bags of cement, and 10,000 T-nuts to the site. Then, the staff installed more than 4,000 handholds to create 100 routes, lined up 24 top-ropes, and, finally, opened the doors to new and experienced climbers alike.

In addition to offering open-climbing passes, instructors teach classes for children and adults, introducing them to the thrill of indoor climbing—which offers many of the same challenges as outdoor climbing, but with fewer mountain trolls. The instructors pay careful attention to each of their students, whether they’re parents teamed up with their 5–9 year olds for Tadpoles & Bullfrogs classes, older climbers enrolled in the Getting Into It introductory course, or advanced climbers learning to transition to outdoor climbing. They also supervise birthday parties that include bouldering games and time on the ropes.
