Red Tree Lodge makes it easy for guests to enjoy the Canadian Rockies just outside their door. Borrow a bike from the front desk to cruise around town, or hop on the chairlift at Fernie Alpine Resort—a 10-minute drive away—to mountain bike, hike, or downhill ski, depending on the season. When you get back to the hotel, wash off at the mountain bike and boot wash station; come winter, prep your snowboards and skis for the slopes at the hotel’s tuning room.

  • Free chow: Enjoy a complimentary breakfast snack each morning of muffins, fruit, yogurt, coffee, tea, and hot cocoa
  • Where you’ll stay: Standard rooms come with free WiFi and a 32-inch TV, but you could upgrade to a superior room to add a private balcony with mountain views.
  • Where to relax: The hotel’s indoor pool, hot tub, and sauna encourages guests to unwind after a day on the mountain.
  • Guest kitchen: Head to the shared guest kitchen to make popcorn, bake cookies, or whip up a quick meal
  • Have a cook-out: Purchase your grub at Back Country Meats, located across the street, and take advantage of the hotel’s communal BBQ pit
  • Play a game of foosball, poker, or pool in the games room
  • Snuggle up on the couches in the movie theater room; guests can borrow a movie from the front desk
  • Summer activities: Fernie Alpine Resort hosts mountain biking, hiking, ziplining, and shopping.

Fernie, British Columbia: Historic Mountain Town with World-Class Outdoor Recreation

Fernie began as a coal mining boomtown in the 1870s and reinvented itself in the 1960s with its namesake ski resort. Fernie’s western-facing location in the Lizard Range of the Canadian Rockies makes it a popular spot for skiing; the slopes are blanketed with more than 30 feet of snow annually.

You can get a good idea of what life was like in Fernie at the turn of the century in the downtown area, which has a number of historical buildings. For more context, pop into the Fernie Museum, which has exhibits on ski artifacts and galleries with photos of the city through the years.

Of course, you’d be remiss to spend all your time in Fernie cooped up indoors. Even in the warmer months, the chairlift is up and running at Fernie Alpine Resort. It drops off along the mountainside, where you can mountain bike and hike amid alpine meadows. The fishing is also superb in this region; you can land a trophy fish at the Elk River, St. Mary River, or Kootenay River.
